The Population Council is a nonprofit organization and is exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the US Internal Revenue Code.
Despite the difficult economic environment, successful revenue generation during the past few years has enabled the Council to increase investments in our programs. Revenue in 2009 exceeded $100 million, the highest in Population Council history, evidence of the continued confidence our donors have in the high quality of our programmatic activities.
The growth in revenue from 2008 also reflects a recovery in the Council’s investment portfolio. The Council’s supporting services expenditures remained stable, while investment in program services and related activities continues to expand, indicating our success in promoting growth.
In 2009, operating expenditures totaled
$95.1 million, an increase of 25 percent over the previous year. The Council’s grant from USAID for the Family Advancement for Life and Health (FALAH) project in Pakistan accounts for about half of the 2009 growth in the Council’s program activities. Overall program spending totaled 88 percent of operating expenses, increasing from 85 percent in 2008. This figure means that the Council invests 88 cents of every dollar directly into program activities.
Board-designated unrestricted funds provide the Council with a stable financial base to respond to increasing requests for assistance. We closely monitor the Council’s financial condition and remain committed to the fiscal discipline necessary to maintain our record of accomplishments.
